The funding

The Nature Interpretation Service is a network organisation.

The Nature Interpreters have each very different backgrounds and are employed by a range of different employers, therefore it is difficult to describe a typical day for a typical Danish Nature Interpreter.

A typical Danish Nature Interpreter is a teacher, a biologist or someone who has studied forestry. Typically, the person will be employed in the National Forest and Nature Agency which administrates state-owned forests and Nature areas; in the counties; in the local authorities; in green organisations and in the many new Nature and Activity Centres which are being built at present.

It is estimated that the Nature Interpreter Service in Denmark costs about DKK50 million each year. Most of the budget comes from public funds. The Secretariat for the Nature Interpreter Service, the training of interpreters and the development of new interpretation methods are paid for partly by the Nature and Forest Agency (the State) and partly by the Danish Outdoor Council with funds from football pools and Lotteries.

The Danish Outdoor Council plays a very active role in the development of Nature Interpretation in Denmark supporting the work to a considerable extent and providing funds from football pools and lotteries. Around 50 organizations receive grants to pay the salary of a Nature Interpreter.
